Following extensive review and consultation, the interagency Child and Maternal Health Well-being CAMH Taskforce has successfully completed its comprehensive strategic plan on June 14th, 2024. The newly published CAMH Strategy and Action Plan is a testament to our commitment in addressing new challenges like rising maternal age at first childbirth which increases risks of pregnancy complications and childhood obesity - a precursor for lifelong obesity.
Singapore has made notable strides in child health outcomes, yet faces evolving challenges that require adaptive strategies. The CAMH Taskforce, led by Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Health, Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, was convened to strengthen support systems for children from birth through 18 years old and their families. Supported by over two dozen agencies across health, social services, and education sectors, this initiative is part of a broader government effort med at addressing multifaceted health issues holistically.
The strategy encompasses three core components:
We're working to streamline service delivery so families can access multiple needs in one visit. For instance, integrating mother-child healthcare services into polyclinics and establishing Family Nexus hubs at various locations.
Our goal is to reduce barriers by enhancing coordination across health, social services, and education sectors. This involves developing comprehensive pathways for families seeking assistance from different domns.
Scalable community-based care options are being introduced through healthcare cluster pilots like Project HOME and HEADS-UPP which offer tlored support for lower-income households in collaboration with social agencies and preschools.
To empower parents, our initiatives include:
Preparation Materials: Providing resources such as guidelines on managing gestational diabetes, addressing psycho-emotional issues faced by children, and preparing couples for marriage and parenthood.
Health Education Resources: Launching guidelines that cover physical activity, screen use, and feeding habits to help parents promote healthy behaviors among their children.
Interactive Online Platforms: Introducing online resources at the Student Learning Space with interactive content designed for students, promoting good eating habits and balanced meals.
The CAMH Taskforce has identified strategic interventions including:
Implementing a mother-child dyad service delivery model in 19 polyclinics to enhance convenience.
Launching Family Nexus pilot hubs at Our Tampines Hub, Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic, Punggol Polyclinic, and Sembawang Polyclinic for families with young children or those planning marriage and parenthood.
We're also prioritizing support for vulnerable groups through healthcare cluster pilot programs that offer preventive health checks, advice on healthy behaviors, and management of psychological symptoms in primary care settings.
The comprehensive report detls these strategies, emphasizing their importance in nurturing child and maternal well-being. It highlights the ongoing collaborative efforts between government departments to empower future generations to grow up healthy and reach their potential.
