Singapore's inter-agency initiative led by the Child and Maternal Health Well-being CAMH Taskforce has successfully completed its strategy formulation and action plan implementation on June 14th, 2024. This strategic approach consists of three core thrusts and nine recommations that are translated into 48 distinct initiatives med at elevating children's health outcomes and maximizing their developmental potential in preparation for a healthier future generation of Singaporeans.
In light of improving child and maternal health outcomes while acknowledging the new challenges posed by an increasing age of first-time mothers, which poses risks to pregnancy complications and childhood obesity as a precursor to obesity later on, this comprehensive strategy is pivotal. To ensure adaptability and continuous enhancement in addressing individual health requirements beyond the health sector domn, Singapore's government has taken proactive steps through this strategic plan.
The CAMH Taskforce was established in January 2021 under the guidance of key experts and stakeholders across multiple sectors including healthcare professionals, educational institutions, and policymakers. This multidisciplinary collaboration facilitated a thorough examination and understanding of existing health policies and identified areas requiring improvement for mothers and children's well-being.
Three core thrusts form the backbone of this strategic plan:
The first thrust focuses on developing integrated services that support families as units, streamlining access to healthcare and social resources. This includes a mother-child dyad service delivery model implemented across various polyclinics.
To bridge the gap between health and education, the second thrust emphasizes collaboration among these sectors through the integration of health-oriented learning materials in educational curricula. This ensures that children are equipped with knowledge to adopt healthy habits from an early age.
The final thrust is dedicated to building robust community support systems for vulnerable groups like lower-income families and at-risk adolescents by integrating healthcare services with social welfare programs.
Key initiatives include:
Integration of Services: Implementation of a mother-child dyad service delivery model in polyclinics enables efficient access to healthcare tlored to both the mother and child.
Family Nexus Pilot Programs: Launching Family Nexus pilot centers at strategic locations like Our Tampines Hub, Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic, Punggol Polyclinic, and Sembawang Polyclinic at Bukit Canberra provides a single-source hub for health and social services.
Community Health Enhancement Projects: Collaboration with social agencies and preschools through initiatives such as Project HOME and HEADS-UPP to offer preventive healthcare screenings, advice on managing psychological symptoms, and other support services.
This strategy's comprehensive approach underscores Singapore's commitment to fostering optimal child development and maternal health outcomes through a multi-sectorial collaboration. The CAMH Strategy and Action Plan Report is publicly avlable for stakeholders and the public at large to gn insights into the strategic initiatives by the Ministry of Health on their official website: https:go.gov.sgcamh-taskforce-report-jun24.
