Capturing the Social Location of African American Mothers Living With HIV:

Abstract:

This paper presents a qualitative study med at understanding the social context in which African American mothers living with HIV navigate their lives. The research employs an interpretive framework to explore and capture various facets of this demographic's experiences, challenges, and resilience.

Methods:

A semi-structured interview guide was developed based on the conceptual model that integrates themes such as stigma, healthcare access, community support, family dynamics, and psychological well-being. Participants were recruited through a purposive sampling strategy targeting African American women living with HIV who are mothers. Data collection involved conducting in-depth interviews until thematic saturation was achieved.

Findings:

The study identified several key themes emerging from the data. Stigma surrounding HIVDS, often compounded by racial discrimination, significantly impacted dly life and decision-making processes for these mothers. Barriers to healthcare access were prevalent, including disparities in insurance coverage and the lack of culturally competent care. Inadequate family support contributed to feelings of isolation and stress, which further exacerbated health challenges. However, resilience agnst adversity was evident through community involvement, peer networks, and self-care practices.

Implications:

The findings underscore the need for tlored interventions that address both individual needs and systemic barriers faced by African American HIV-positive mothers. Implementing culturally sensitive programs in healthcare settings could improve access to care. Moreover, fostering supportive family environments requires community engagement and awareness campgns targeting stigma reduction. Mental health services should be integrated into comprehensive care plans.
