LAUNCH OF CHILD AND MATERNAL HEALTH WELL-BEING STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN REPORT

The interagency Child and Maternal Health Well-being CAMH Taskforce has completed its comprehensive Strategy and Action Plan. This plan was unveiled on June 14th, 2024, ming to enhance health outcomes for children and their families, and maximizing the developmental potential of our young generation through a concerted societal effort.

Singapore's Health Landscape

Despite Singapore's commable achievements in child and maternal health outcomes, new challenges emerge. The rising age at which first-time mothers give birth escalates risks associated with pregnancy complications and childhood obesity - a precursor to lifelong obesity issues. This necessitates a continuous adaptation of strategies and increased efforts towards optimizing the health and well-being of children from birth to their teenage years.

Initiating Action through Collaborative Efforts

In response, an interagency Taskforce led by Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Health, Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, was convened in January 2021. Comprised of over 20 representatives from health, social services, and education sectors across more than twenty agencies, this Taskforce is part of a larger government effort to address individual health needs beyond the traditional health domn.

Comprehensive Review and Recommations

The Taskforce conducted an extensive review to identify areas needing improvement and has developed nine strategic recommations for action. These include:

  1. Holistic Service Delivery: Offering services tlored to families as units, making healthcare more accessible.

  2. Enhanced Partnerships: Strengthening collaborations between health, social services, and education sectors to reduce barriers to accessing these services.

  3. Community-Based Support: Right-siting care and expanding options avlable in communities for children, adolescents, and their families.

Strategic Recommations in Detl

The Taskforce has devised specific initiatives under each recommation:

  1. Mother-Child Dyad Service: Implementing a model that enables mothers and children to receive healthcare services together during visits at polyclinics. This model has already been operationalized in 19 out of the 32 existing polyclinics.

  2. Family Nexus Hub: Launching pilot sites that serve as one-stop hubs for families with young children or couples planning marriage and parenthood, providing integrated health and social services at Our Tampines Hub, Choa Chu Kang Polyclinic, Punggol Polyclinic, and Sembawang Polyclinic.

  3. Enhanced Community Support: Implementing pilot programs like Project HOME and HEADS-UPP in collaboration with social agencies to provide preventive health screenings and advice for lower-income families, as well as support services tlored for at-risk adolescents.

The CAMH Taskforce's Impact

Over the years, a robust framework has been established nurturing children’s health both at home, through education, and within communities. The Taskforce's work leverages expertise from various stakeholders to refine and expand existing programs and services, ming to support mothers and children comprehensively.
