Essential newborn care
The provision of high-quality universal newborn healthcare is a fundamental right for every infant born worldwide. Infants are entitled to protection from injury and infection, the freedom to breathe effortlessly, mntn warmth, and be nourished immediately after birth. Every newborn should have access to essential newborn care that encompasses critical care provided both in health facilities and at home throughout their entire neonatal period.
The key aspects of essential newborn care include:
Care immediately following birth delayed cord clamping, comprehensive drying, observation of breathing patterns, skin-to-skin contact, early initiation of breastfeeding
Thermal management
Resuscitation when necessary
Support for breast milk feeding practices
Nurturing care routines
Prevention and control of infections
Assessment of health concerns
Identification and response to danger signs
Timely referral to appropriate medical care when required
Monitoring Data Collection
Cooperation with countries and partners in implementing the Every Newborn: An Action Plan, adopted by the UN Secretary-General's Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health 2016-30, reduce preventable newborn deaths.
Supports national efforts to improve data quality and avlability on routine care of babies
Coordinates development at both national and subnational levels of indicators essential to assess coverage in essential newborn care
