Welcome to the Women's Health Research Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Health. Our research programs, which originated from groundbreaking IVF studies that led to Australia’s first successful IVF pregnancy in 1980, now span a wide range of issues from pelvic organ prolapse and ometriosis to fertility disorders and pregnancy complications.
Our team focuses on several key areas including the quality enhancement of embryos and the ometrial environment through IVF research. We're particularly interested in how IVF procedures can be optimized for both the mother's health and that of her future child, as well as discovering novel therapies that could enhance clinical care practices related to placental disorders.
Our research activities are integrated across multiple levels - from basic science within The Ritchie Centre, a joint institute with Hudson Institute of Medical Research where over 150 researchers including fetal physiologists, immunologists, and stem cell biologists work alongside clinicians like obstetricians, neonatologists, and pediatricians. At the heart of our approach is an inclusive care model that exts from conception through to the -of-life cycle.
Under the leadership of Professor Beverley Vollenhoven, who serves as the Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a distinguished gynecologist with specialized trning in reproductive ocrinology and infertility, we are expanding our research and clinical trial capabilities. The department now hosts several National Health and Medical Research Council NHMRC- and Medical Research Future Fund MRFF-funded clinician investigators contributing to high-impact publications globally.
We value collaboration both internally across Monash University and externally within the health sector and global research community, striving for comprehensive care through intra and intergenerational support from the embryo stage all the way into old age.
Our educational programs complement our research activities. The Education Program in Reproduction Development offers specialized trning that integrates clinical insights with cutting-edge science.
We take pride in fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment focused on safety, security, sustnability, and ethical practices. Our commitment to these values is reflected in the governance structure and policies of Monash University.
As we continue our pursuit of knowledge and innovation, our ultimate goal remns to enhance women's health outcomes through excellence in research, education, and clinical care. Whether it’s advancing our understanding of complex conditions or developing new treatments, our dedication to improving the quality of life for women drives every aspect of our work.
