The essential newborn care is a fundamental right for every baby born worldwide. Every baby deserves to be protected from harm, to breathe freely, to mntn warmth and receive nourishment from their mother’s milk. It's paramount that all newborns have access to quality newborn care services, which encompass critical health management both in healthcare facilities and at home throughout the early stages of life.
Quality newborn care includes:
Immediate care at birth immediate clamping of the umbilical cord, thorough drying, assessment of breathing, skin-to-skin contact, initiation of breastfeeding
Thermal protection
Resuscitation support when required
Facilitating breast milk feeding
Caring for the baby's wellbeing
Preventing infections
Monitoring health status
Recognizing and responding to warning signs
Ensuring timely referral if needed.
WHO Collaborations:
Working with nations and partners to implement Every Newborn: An action plan which targets the reduction of preventable deaths through a strategic framework of UN Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women's, Children's Adolescents' Health 2016-30.
Assisting countries in enhancing data collection on routine healthcare services for newborns.
Coordinating development of national and subnational indicators to evaluate the coverage of key indicators for quality newborn care.
Resources:
Regular updating of clinical guidelines for routine newborn care.
Supporting implementation of these guidelines across nations.
